Sonata Arctica

What is the meaning of "Sonata Arctica"?

The name consists of two parts: Sonata = a music(al) part: dictionary.com says "A composition for one or more solo instruments, one of which is usually a keyboard instrument, usually consisting of three or four independent movements varying in key, mood, and tempo." Arctica = the pole/arctic area in the northern parts of Scandinavia.

When will SA come to my country?

There aren't any official tour dates except for those which can be found in the tour section of the official website. The tour list will be updated as soon as new gigs are confirmed. Due to the nature of the music business, tours often get announced by promoters and booking agencies before they're 100% agreed on. If you can't see a show in the list, it's not confirmed, regardless of what you've been told. The band itself cannot decide where they will play, if you want them to play in your country because there isn't any date in the tour section, you should contact a local promotion agency to book them. Asking on websites does not help to get the band to play at your city or country.

Who created the logo and the cover artworks?

Janne Pitkänen, who’s also known as “Toxicangel”, does almost all cover artworks. You can see more of his works here.

What is the current line-up of Sonata Arctica?

Who left the band on its way?

Their first bass player was called Pentti Peura (1996-1997), he played bass in the demoband-days (Marko played the guitar back then). Janne Kivilahti used to play the bass on Ecliptica and Successor (~2000) before Marko returned to the band to play the bass. Mikko Härkin entered the band when Tony Kakko decided to concentrate on singing, he was SA's keyboardplayer on some songs of Successor and the whole Silence album (1999 - 2002). Jani Liimatainen (guitarist) and Sonata Arctica parted their ways in 2007. On 2013, Marko Paasikoski left the band due to unsolvable issues with being part of a touring ensemble.

What kind of ‘keytar’ does Henkka use live?

On his websites Henkka tell this about his instruments: I've gone through a whole bunch of keys over the years and the tweaking still continues. I started out on a Roland D-20 in the early 90's , later I saved up to buy a Kurzweil K2000. The K2000 along with a K2000R and a K2500 were my main keyboards until around 2002 when I joined Sonata. Some other stuff used during this era were a Kawai Phm, Korg DW-6000, Korg Poly-800 and a Kurzweil PC88, I also started to use different effect pedals and guitar/bass amps. When I joined Sonata I used a Korg Triton along with the Kurzweils and a rack from hell (=too big, too many wires and constanty breaking down...) , then I got a Korg Karma and used that as my main sound source for a while. At some point I had a smaller rack with a Triton, Roland Fantom XR and some effects in it. Right now my main live keyboard is the Korg M3, with a couple of pedals for the lead sound (Boss Blues Driver, Noise Suppressor and Digital Delay). I also use any available digital piano for the more delicate stuff (mostly Roland RD-700). In the studio there's a whole bunch of stuff, Korg: M3, Triton Rack, Karma, Microsampler.Roland: JV2080, Fantom XR and my trusty old Kurzweil K2500.....oh and the Clavia G2 which is a cool piece as well. I'm currently endorsed by Korg & Roland ! ...and then..... I started playing these shoulder-controller-80's-thing with Requiem back in 2001 and I've gone through a couple of them in the last 10 years. Roland is the preferred brand and I've used Ax-1's, Ax-7's and most recently the Ax-synth.

My Axes:

Red Devil (Punainen Paholainen, Ax-1) This was the first one I used, our friend named it...to this day I'm not sure if he liked it or despised it. Nevertheless you can see this one in The livevideo of Broken on the SA release Takatalvi. By that time I had covered it with black tape at our guitar players house one morning when I woke up hungover and confused. At some point in the spring of 2005 this one was gone.....

Moon (Ax-7) The first one I had custom painted with ice and snow and shit, it was handpainted and looked really cool (probably one of the best looking keys I've ever owned). You'll find this one in the SA video of Don't say a word as well as on the live DVD: For the sake of Revenge where I smashed it towards the end of the show, R.I.P.

Little Ed (Ax-7) Looking like a mess with red, blue and black lines as well as tape here and there and some random scribblings with a marker here's the one who got me through the rest of the Reckoning Night Tour. I got it in Japan after I destroyed Moon. You can find it in the Misplaced live video. In the fall of 2006 when the tour was over I put this in a case somewhere, it probably smells really good by now with all the beersweat and vodka all dried up.

Purple Boy (Ax-1) The second one I had painted. I used this one for the Unia Tour. It made a comeback on the SA video Flag in the ground as well as on the AustralAsian part of the Days of Grays world tour. I still have it but it's really beat up.

Woodstock (Ax-7) I used this at random occasions on the Unia tour and it was featured in the Japanese version of Keyboard magazine. Probably the Ax that is in the best shape of the ones I have left, it only has a few stickers on it but otherwise it's unviolated.

Drunken Picasso (Ax-7) I have no idea what posessed me to destroy a perfectly good keyboard by painting it, while wasted on whisky. You'll probably never see me with this anywhere. Check below for the pic and you'll know why,

Big Dog (Ax-synth) The first Ax-synth for me, I painted it myself and it's my main Axe for the Days of Grays tour. It will be on the next DVD if it doesn't brake down before that.

When the next live DVD/album will be released?

If a new live DVD is being in production, it will be informed in the website. But it is highly unlikely the next live release will happen during the current tour.

Did SA really cover Over The Hills And Far Away?

No, the file-sharing software lies! Same goes for nearly all other songs which aren't mentioned at the official site but nevertheless can be found at one of the file-sharing programs. That song that is named "Sonata Arctica - Over The Hills And Far Away" is a cover-version played by Thyrfing (Tony did some backing vocals for Nightwish's Over The Hills And Far Away - cover though).

top

Which songs are said to be from Sonata Arctica, but are not?

Other songs that might appear at file-sharing programs could be some of these:

  • "Stronger Than All" - by Hammerfall
  • "Images Of The Past" - by Kenziner
  • "Forest Of Unicorns" and "Beyond The Gates Of Infinity" - by Rhapsody
  • "Last September" and "Rock Box" - by Marty Friedman
  • "Thor (The Thundergod)" and "Gate of Fear" - by Zonata
  • "In Between" - by Lost Horizon
  • "Crying" - by Soul Sailor
  • "Blessed Are You" - by Iced Earth
  • “Only God Knows” – by Axxis
  • "Daylight" should be a real Sonata Arctica song, whose real name is "Sing In Silence".

top

Which songs did they cover?

  • "Still Loving You" - by Scorpions (on Successor, Takatalvi)
  • "I Want Out" - by Helloween (on Successor, Takatalvi)
  • "Die With Your Boots On" - by Iron Maiden (on Orientation, Last Drop Falls CDS)
  • "The Wind Beneath My Wings" - by Bette Midler (on Orientation)
  • "Fade To Black" - by Metallica (on Victoria's Secret CDS, Takatalvi)
  • "World In My Eyes" - by Depeche Mode (on Don't Say A Word)
  • "Two Minds, One Soul" - by Vanishing Point (on Don't Say A Word)
  • "Out In The Fields" - by Gary Moore & Phill Lynott (on Paid In Full CDS)
  • "Hell is Living Without You" from Alice Cooper. It was released on June 2011, on a charity compilation called "One for All, All for One"

These can be found on records as you can see and in addition, they have played some songs live like:

  • "Crash & Burn" - by Yngwie Malmsteen
  • "Silent Jealousy" - by X Japan
  • "Excuse me while I kill myself" – by Sentenced's. In late 2005 they covered this songs a few times in Finland.
  • "Hiljaisen talven lapsi"- by Timo Rautiainen, in Kemi on last show of the Reckoning Night Tour. This was the Sonata Open Air show. The very first one in 2006.
  • "Runaway" – by Del Shannon'. Acoustic on the famous show in Milan (January 2011)
  • "Wind Beneath My Wings" was played live at least once, Tokyo 2001

Additionally, Sonata Arctica DID play Black Diamond (with and originally by Stratovarius) during their last gig on their first European Tour in 2000. Nowadays there seem to be lots of videos on youtube.com insisting the material is from the Tricky Means (or Tricky Beans) era - the information is false. The clip is from the above-mentioned tour with Rhapsody and Stratovarius, which can easily be verified seeing a) Mikko Härkin (joined the band after Ecliptica was released, before the European tour) holding the camera, b) Janne Kivilahti on bass (was no member of Tricky Beans) and c) Stratovarius drummer Jörg Michael can be seen with Tommy on the drum set and the most important reason d) the excerpt is originally taken from Stratovarius' Infinite Visions DVD shot during their 'Infinite' tour (SA as their support act)...

top

What is Silent Jealousy? Is it a song of Sonata Arctica? And where is it to be found?

Silent Jealousy originally is a song by a band called X Japan. Sonata Arctica played a short excerpt from it in a show in Japan during the tour promoting the Silence-album - to be precise in the show the day after they recorded their live-album Songs Of Silence (which means the 5th September of 2001 - because the live album was recorded at 4th September). Somebody recorded this show as well and spread it as bootleg under the name of "Only Way You Can".

top

Why do the Japanese people usually get those cool bonus-tracks?

CDs are really expensive over there, so they have to try to avoid that the Japanese people buy the cheaper import CDs then, which would let the Japanese CD market break down. So the albums usually get some cool features to make the people there buy their own CDs. Sonata Arctica are very successful in Japan, even more successful than Nightwish - and that for a quite long period, especially compared to the time that Sonata Arctica exists so far.

top

What videos/music clips do exist?

There are just 4 official video clips of Sonata Arctica:

  • Wolf And Raven (story-based clip), song taken from SILENCE

clip appears for example on the limited French edition of SILENCE, the EP Orientation, the DVD Monsters Of Metal Vol.1 and the Spinefarm Metal DVD

  • Broken (live footage), song taken from WINTERHEART'S GUILD

clip appears on the Japanese EP Takatalvi

  • Don't Say A Word (performing video), song taken from RECKONING NIGHT

clip appears on the DVD Monsters Of Metal Vol.3

  • Paid In Full (performing video), song taken from UNIA.
  • Flag In The Ground (performing video/story-based clip), song taken from THE DAYS OF GRAYS
  • I Have A Right song taken from STONES GROW HER NAME
  • Shitload Of Money song taken from STONES GROW HER NAME

All others are bootleg videos.

There is also (yet unreleased) documentary film called "Songs From The North Or Something", screened twice in Finnish film festivals so far.

What is with this album called "Deliverance"?

It is a bootleg and it is illegal. It wasn't released by the band nor will be released any time in the future. All the material on this 'album' can be found as B-sides on other official releases. Don't believe any rumours that are spreading in the internet if you don't have any official source.

Where can I find the lyrics?

Nearly all lyrics can be found in the booklet of each album, at the official site, on this site or at one of the several fansites.

Who is Dana?

Dana is Mary-Lou, Mary-Lou is Tallulah and Tallulah is Victoria. Dana is nobody or could be everybody, it is a figure out of Tony's imagination. The name "Dana" was inspired by a character of the X-File movies, but has nothing to do with her.

top

Who is Shamandalie?

Shamandalie in fact is a made-up name, it consists of the words "sham - and - a - lie". Tony just left out the blanks and the result looks like a girl's name.

Where can I find SA's tabs?

You can find some on MySongBook or http://www.sonataarctica.net. You will need the program GUITAR PRO to open them. Mostly they include the keytabs as well.

The song is based on a Finnish novel "Ulvova mylläri" (1981) by Arto Paasilinna, one of the most well-known Finnish authors. Why did SA call their 2003 album "Winterheart's Guild" and what's the meaning of the cover?

On the cover you can see 4 persons - one for each season. The two persons in the front are Autumn and Winter, and Autumn gives the power, the spectre of all seasons, to Winter, because that's the strongest season in Finland. In the booklet itself you can see the (that time) four guys in form of the seasons, so they are the... Winterheart's Guild.

top

What is said at the end of Winterheart's Guild?

One day a bird flew into the studio, and a guy tries to get it out. Finally he succeeds, so Tony says that he should win an award from Greenpeace ("Ansaitsetteko greenpeacen") - the guy answers: "Yeah, a bird meal!" (-"Lintupaistin") Then, after the silence, Henkka says "Mä oon Henkka ja mä tulin nyt." I'm Henkka and I come now.

Why is there a short period of silence in the intro of "Misplaced?

This "gap" is intended.

There is a strange song on my Reckoning Night version that isn't listed at the back of my CD. Is that the Japan-bonus track "Wrecking The Sphere?" (+ additional information about "Wrecking The Sphere")

It's just the normal hidden track SA use to have on every album. It's a "Jam" session recorded spontaneously and so the guys decided to put it on the album. "Wrecking The Sphere" is a real song, though, which only is available on the Japanese edition of Reckoning Night, so you have to order it if you don't live there.

Often the two songs are mixed up, especially since there is a mistake on freedb data.

If you rip a CD, most programs look for data from freedb, in case someone has submitted the data for the same CD already. If someone submitted wrong data there once, you automatically receive wrong information. This happened to the "Jam" song.

Things like these happen if some person once submits incorrect information and this can lead to our little problem here. Not to forget to mention what can happen on P2P-Networks.

Last but not least an easy way how you can distinguish between the two songs.

JAM - is an instrumental song. No real song, as mentioned above, and it lasts: 2:51 minutes. If you have a CD with 11 tracks, then no. 11 is the JAM track. If you have a CD with 12 tracks (which is the Japanese edition), then no. 12 is the JAM track.

WRECKING THE SPHERE - is a 'real' song, you can find the lyrics either in the booklet of the Japanese edition or on the website. This song lasts: 7:02 minutes. If you have a CD with 12 tracks, it's track no. 11.

top

What is said in the hidden bonus track "Jam"?

Here is the conversation, translated into English:

"Should it roll?" "Tape is rolling" "You are too old" "You are too old?"

"Best flamenco" "Best flamenco what?" "Best flamenco is very good" "It was there in a hotel's lobby"

"Where is Paasikoski?" "I can't see him" "Where is Marko?" "He's still lost after that April Fools gag" "But this song has no bass anyway"

"Doesn't have any keyboards either" "Well well" "Ok let's start" "I'm so nervous" "Just calm down" "Yes"

Whee Hey "_???_"

Hey

Hey Whoo Wohoo Hey Hey Allright "Don't f******g break that!"

top

Who's the voice saying "The Enemy" on To Create A Warlike Feel?

He was former president of the United States, George W. Bush.

top

What's said in the beginning of Caleb?

"There is a man in this world who has never smiled. You may know his tragedy, the later years, by heart. In the beginning there was a mother, a father and a child - a troubled little silent boy, whose life they were to destroy, known to us from this day on like his father, Caleb."

top

Who's providing the female voice in Caleb?

As the booklet states: "Caleb - The Lady in the beginning of - Milla V."

top

What is this strange noise at the end of Good Enough Is Good Enough?

It is not a part of the song, but a common joke by the band to add something funny at the end of every album. In this case one can hear a person snoring. In the versions where Good Enough Is Good Enough isn't the last song, this 'joke' appears at the end of the album.

Where can I get demos?

The original demo cassettes were released in very small amounts if at all. They are virtually impossible to find anywhere, even from Finland. In an extremely rare case of one being available in e.g. a web auction site, the price will definitely skyrocket. Some old demo songs have though been remade for the later releases:

  • Find A Gun: Broken (single), Takatalvi (EP); as "The Gun"
  • Letter To Dana: Ecliptica
  • Shy: Successor (EP), Takatalvi (EP)
  • PeaceMaker: Wolf & Raven (single)
  • Tallulah: Silence

Finnish

What's the meaning of the things written on the sleeves of the Silence/Winterheart's Guild longsleeves?

Left side is "Kiljaisuus" which is wordplay and consists of the words "Kiljaisu" (which means "scream") and "Hiljaisuus" ("silence"). right side is "Kempura Perkele". Kempura is a name and Perkele should be well-known.

Winterheart's Guild: "Päätää riisiin" = "Put your head on rice" - [+ 'Don't Ask'] and "Vasen" (means "left") + "Oikea" (means "right")

What's the meaning of Takatalvi?

You can find this explanation by Tony in the Takatalvi booklet. But for those that don't have it: 'Takatalvi is a Finnish word, meaning (as it says in dictionary) "cold spell in spring", a short moment when it suddenly gets colder and often we get a new snow cover on the landscape for a day or even for only few hours; he thought this would in a way describe this little compilation very well. All songs are old and suddenly "brought back" like "Takatalvi".'
